Visualizing Music on the Metrical Circle
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we propose a novel method, called Metrical Circle Map, for exploring the cyclic aspects of musical time. To this end, we give a concise formalization and introduce the notion of Metrical Markov chains as n-th order transition probabilities of segments on the metrical circle. Several examples from a wide range of music, including monophonic folk and pop songs, as well as polyphonic drum grooves, are given to illustrate the analytical and descriptive powers of the method already at an early stage of development.

Cross-cultural differences in meter perception.
We examined the influence of incidental exposure to varied metrical patterns from different musical cultures on the perception of complex metrical structures from an unfamiliar musical culture. Adults who were familiar with Western music only (i.e., simple meters) and those who also had limited familiarity with non-Western music were tested on their perception of metrical organization in unfami...
متن کاملA Study on the Metrical Structure of Music with Similarity Experiments
This study explains the metrical hierarchical structure of music that deals with onsets of musical events and the distances between them. The metrical structure is essential for the temporal organization of notes and the perception of rhythm. The paper shows the suitability of inter onset interval histograms to cover major metrical characteristics such as dominant metrical levels, regularity an...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of Metrical Structure Based on GTTM
This paper describes an automatic system of music analysis based on the generative theory of tonal music (GTTM). The system works by acquiring the metrical structure of the music. The GTTM is considered one of the most promising theories of music in regard to computer implementation; however, no order is given for applying its rules and as a result, they frequently conflict with each other. To ...
متن کاملMetrical Strength and Contradiction in Turkish Makam Music
In this paper we investigate how note onsets in Turkish Makam music compositions are distributed, and in how far this distribution supports or contradicts the metrical structure of the pieces, the usul. We use MIDI data to derive the distributions in the form of onset histograms, and compare them with metrical weights that are applied to describe the usul in theory. We compute correlation and s...
متن کاملA Unified Probabilistic Model for Polyphonic Music Analysis
This article presents a probabilistic model of polyphonic music analysis. Taking a note pattern as input, the model combines three aspects of symbolic music analysis— metrical analysis, harmonic analysis, and stream segregation—into a single process, allowing it to capture the complex interactions between these structures. The model also yields an estimate of the probability of the note pattern...
